How to buy a used car without surprises

4 min read

Five checks before you pay a deposit — none of them needs a mechanic.

First, compare the mileage with the age. An average car in Macedonia does about 15,000 km a year — a 2014 car showing 90,000 km needs an explanation, and “kept in a garage” is not one without service records.

Second, ask for the service history before you go see the car. A seller who has it ready usually has nothing to hide.

Third, only view a car in daylight and dry weather. Rain and dusk are bad paint's best friends.

Fourth, check the papers: the chassis number in the registration against the one on the car, and whether customs were paid on an import. A car with messy paperwork is someone else's problem sold at a discount.

Fifth — always arrange an inspection with a mechanic you choose, not one the seller suggests. A fifty-euro check has saved people thousands.
